Hawaii’s Moniz & McDougall Claim WSL QS Wins In Haleiwa

Zoe McDougall and Joshua Moniz of Hawaii emerged victorious at the World Surf League (WSL) The Hawaiian Islands HIC Haleiwa Pro on Tuesday, a Qualifying Series (QS) 1000 event held in pumping four-to-six-foot conditions on Oahu’s North Shore.

Key Takeaways

  • Zoe McDougall won the women’s title, scoring 15.70, narrowly defeating Bettylou Sakura Johnson.
  • Joshua Moniz dominated the men’s final with a score of 17.55, marking his first QS victory since 2018.
  • The event showcased high-performance surfing with numerous 9-point rides and excellent scores.

McDougall clinched the women’s title by narrowly defeating WSL Championship Tour standout Bettylou Sakura Johnson, scoring 15.70 to Johnson’s 15.50. Alyssa Spencer finished third with a two-wave total of 14.35.

“It’s so awesome to have a win at the place I literally learned how to surf and the first place I ever competed,” McDougall said. “It’s just a lot of firsts here, and it feels great to take a win at home in such amazing waves. This year, I’ve been focusing on getting my mind right, slowing down, and being smart. I took some time away from the Challenger Series, and it’s nice to come back feeling brand new.”

On the men’s side, Moniz dominated with five nine-point rides throughout the tournament, capturing his first QS victory since the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro. Moniz posted a score of 17.55 in the final, outpacing Shion Crawford’s 16.20 and Finn McGill’s 15.10.

“It feels great to win. It’s been a while, and I’ve had a pretty bumpy surf career competing, so to have an event like this where everything went smooth from start to finish is pretty cool,” Moniz said. “I can feel that momentum again and play at that level with all the big boys. I was just fired up to be in the water with a bunch of my friends and knew I had to surf well to win. It all worked out in my favor.”
