Hawaii’s vibrant surf community is in mourning following the passing of Ramon Brockington, the cherished videographer behind Oahu Surf Films. For two decades, Brockington dedicated himself to capturing the essence of Hawaiian surf culture, documenting surfers of all levels with unwavering positivity and kindness. His loss leaves a profound void, felt deeply by the countless individuals whose waves and moments he preserved.

A Legacy of Waves and Connection

  • Ramon Brockington, the videographer for Oahu Surf Films, has passed away, leaving a significant impact on Hawaii’s surf community.
  • He documented all surfers with encouragement and kindness, fostering a strong sense of community.
  • As Festival Director, he significantly contributed to surf film culture and touched many lives through his generosity.

Arriving on O‘ahu from South Carolina with a passion for cinematography and surfing, Brockington established Oahu Surf Films, which evolved into a beloved archive of modern Hawaiian surf culture. Day after day, he could be found at iconic surf spots like Waikīkī, Ala Moana, Kaisers, and the North Shore, filming everyone from beginners to seasoned pros with the same respect and joy. He reveled in sharing his footage, making each surfer feel seen and celebrated.

Impact on Surfers and Filmmakers

Many in the surf community have shared heartfelt tributes to Brockington. Matt Vasquez, who worked with Ramon on his first surf film at 19, expressed deep sorrow, stating that Brockington was a "HUGE part" of his imprint in the surf community. Vasquez recalled countless early meetups to film "La Muerte" and expressed gratitude for Brockington’s role in his career, emphasizing how he helped a "young buck like me to get on the map."

Brockington’s ability to make surfers feel recognized was extraordinary. He remembered names, inquired about families, and celebrated their progress as if it were his own. For many, he was their first highlight reel, their chronicler, and their biggest supporter. His calm energy, encouraging words, and open heart were as valuable to the Oahu surf community as his camera.

Fostering Surf Film Culture

Beyond his videography, Brockington extended his commitment to community as the Festival Director of the Oahu Surf Film Festival from 2022 to 2024. In this role, he welcomed filmmakers globally, curated screenings that celebrated surf culture—including documentaries, environmental pieces, and indigenous storytelling—and united people through the art of surf film.

Ramon Brockington leaves behind not only an extensive archive of surf films but also countless friendships, smiles, and moments of encouragement. His spirit will continue to be felt with every swell that graces Oahu’s shores. His legacy lives on in the footage he captured and, more importantly, in the lives he touched with his generosity and kindness.
