WSL Announces Major Overhaul for 2026 Championship Tour: Pipeline Returns as Season Finale

Surfers ride a massive wave at Pipeline during sunset.

The World Surf League (WSL) has unveiled a significant shake-up for its 2026 Championship Tour (CT), marking the 50th anniversary of professional surfing with an expanded schedule, revised formats, and the iconic Banzai Pipeline returning as the ultimate season-ending event. This strategic shift aims to elevate the stakes from the outset and honor the sport’s rich legacy while propelling it into its next chapter.

Key Takeaways

  • Expanded 12-Event Schedule: The 2026 CT will feature 12 stops across nine countries, running from April to December.
  • Revitalized Finale at Pipeline: The Pipe Masters will serve as the season closer, offering 1.5 times the points of a standard event and featuring all CT surfers.
  • No More "Final Five": The controversial mid-season cut format is eliminated, replaced by a season-long points race culminating at Pipeline.
  • Increased Women’s Field: The women’s field will be expanded, aligning more closely with the men’s tour.
  • Higher Stakes from Day One: Non-elimination rounds are removed, ensuring every heat carries significant consequence.

A New Era for Competitive Surfing

The 2026 Championship Tour will kick off in April at Bells Beach, Australia, and traverse the globe, hitting legendary breaks like Margaret River, Snapper Rocks, Punta Roca, Saquarema, Jeffreys Bay, Teahupo’o, Cloudbreak, and Lower Trestles. The tour then moves to Abu Dhabi and Peniche for the postseason before culminating at the legendary Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii.

This new structure emphasizes a season-long battle for the World Title, with a surfer’s best nine out of twelve results determining the champion. The removal of non-elimination rounds means that every heat from the very first event will have a direct impact on a surfer’s standing, creating a more compelling narrative throughout the season.

The Return of Pipeline as the Pinnacle

Banzai Pipeline will once again host the final event of the Championship Tour, a move celebrated by many surfers and fans. The Pipe Masters will not only crown the event champions but will also hold immense weight in the World Title race. With 15,000 points on offer – 1.5 times that of a regular CT event – and the top eight men and women seeded deep into the draw, the stakes at Pipeline will be higher than ever. This decision reconnects the ultimate prize in surfing with one of its most iconic and challenging waves.

Evolved Event Formats

The WSL has also introduced new event formats designed to increase the intensity and consequence of each heat. Regular-season events (Stops 1-9) will feature larger fields, with the number of surfers narrowing for the two postseason events in Abu Dhabi and Portugal. The formats for men and women will differ slightly across regular-season, postseason, and the Pipe Masters, but the overarching theme is that every heat matters.

For regular-season events, the men’s field will consist of 36 surfers, and the women’s field will have 24. After the ninth stop, the fields will reduce to 24 men and 16 women for the postseason. The Pipe Masters will see the full CT fields reconvene, with 34 men and 22 women competing.

A Nod to Legacy and Future Growth

WSL CEO Ryan Crosby stated that these changes reflect a commitment to honoring surfing’s legacy while shaping its future. The expanded women’s field and the return of Pipeline as the season finale are seen as crucial steps in serving athletes and fans alike. The move away from the "Final Five" format has also been credited with encouraging the return of several top surfers, signaling a potentially brighter future for competitive surfing’s viewership and marketability.
