The World Surf League (WSL) has unveiled a revamped 2026 Championship Tour (CT) schedule and format, designed to elevate the sport’s excitement and honor its rich legacy. Celebrating 50 years of professional surfing, the tour will feature 12 events across nine countries, culminating in a dramatic, winner-takes-all finale at the legendary Banzai Pipeline. This overhaul aims to increase the consequence of every heat, offering a more compelling season for athletes and fans alike.

Key Takeaways

  • 12 Events, 9 Countries: The 2026 CT spans from April to December, visiting iconic surf destinations worldwide.
  • Pipeline Finale: The season concludes with the Pipe Masters, offering significantly more points and a high-stakes showdown for the World Title.
  • Expanded Women’s Field: The women’s CT roster grows to 24 surfers, providing more opportunities.
  • No Mid-Season Cut: The tour features a nine-event regular season followed by two postseason events, with a cumulative ranking determining the World Champions.
  • Every Heat Matters: Non-elimination rounds are removed, ensuring every heat carries direct consequences for rankings.

A Global Gauntlet: The 2026 Schedule

The 2026 Championship Tour kicks off at Bells Beach, Australia, in early April and will traverse the globe, hitting renowned breaks such as Margaret River, Snapper Rocks, Punta Roca, Saquarema, Jeffreys Bay, Teahupo’o, Cloudbreak, and Lower Trestles. The tour then moves to the Middle East for the Surf Abu Dhabi event, followed by a stop in Peniche, Portugal, before the grand finale.

2026 Championship Tour Schedule:

  1. Bells Beach, Australia (April 1-11)
  2. Margaret River, Australia (April 17-27)
  3. Snapper Rocks, Australia (May 2-12)
  4. Punta Roca, El Salvador (May 28-June 7)
  5. Saquarema, Brazil (June 12-20)
  6. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa (July 10-20)
  7. Teahupo’o, Tahiti (August 8-18)
  8. Cloudbreak, Fiji (August 25-September 4)
  9. Lower Trestles, USA (September 11-20)
  10. Surf Abu Dhabi, UAE (October 14-18)
  11. Peniche, Portugal (October 22-November 1)
  12. Banzai Pipeline, USA (December 8-20)

Reimagined Format: Higher Stakes, Clearer Path

This season introduces a significant format shift, eliminating non-elimination rounds. This means every heat from the start will directly impact a surfer’s standing. The tour is divided into nine regular-season events and two postseason events. After the ninth stop, the field narrows from 36 men and 24 women to 24 men and 16 women for the postseason.

Crucially, a surfer’s best seven out of nine results from the regular season will count towards their qualification for the postseason. The final World Champions will be determined by a surfer’s best nine out of twelve results across the entire season.

The Pinnacle: Pipeline Masters Returns as Grand Finale

In a move that celebrates surfing’s heritage, the season will conclude at the iconic Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The Pipe Masters will be the ultimate test, offering 15,000 points – 1.5 times that of a standard event. The top eight surfers heading into Pipeline will receive advanced seeding, ensuring a dramatic and high-consequence conclusion to crown the World Champions. The full CT fields from the start of the season will rejoin the postseason competitors for this prestigious event.

Expanded Opportunities and Athlete Focus

WSL CEO Ryan Crosby emphasized the commitment to athletes and fans, stating, "With the updated formats, we’ll see higher stakes from day one, with every heat carrying real consequence throughout the season." The expansion of the women’s field to 24 surfers is a key development, fostering greater global representation and opportunity within the sport.
