January Rewind: Super swell for the New Year

January was turbocharged! Many hate the first month of the year. Traditionally, the month always seems to drag on forever and we’re often fat, broke and trying not to smoke or drink.

Those resolutions all lasted about, checks notes, two and a half days. Not bad, better luck next year! But one resolution lived on: to shred harder!

Luckily, a super swell delivered some of the most epic waves ever seen on the Maltese coastline. This swell was not for newbies, those who were faint-hearted or inexperienced. We’re talking local fast barrels over a jagged reef, in the rain. Fun times!

Hadrien and Victor got snapped in epic conditions on a new spot, and sticking to our code: even if you know exactly which spot we’re talking about due to their social media channels, we’re not revealing. It was also great to see some amazing shots from Liam, as he continues his journey behind the lends snapping our riders! Give him a follow at Eyeseafoto on IG!

Hadrien told BOMBA: “It was not the wave of my life locally, but the quality of the wave is the best I’ve seen locally. Nothing like experiencing a new spot on one of the biggest days it’s worked in the past few years, and paddling out alone.”

“I wish I could re live it so I could think about it more. I was too busy trying to understand the spot to focus on the wave itself” – Hadrien.

Our usual spots worked, too, this month, and for some reason, we were treated to brilliant pink sunsets as January felt more like spring.  It’s too cool when new spots work, as Flynn and myself discovered in December. There’s something awesome about surfing the barely-surfed, figuring shit out, being alone in a moment of “whoa did that really happen.” The hunters know this pure feeling. The ones who dedicate themselves to going out, rain, sunshine or hail to make it happen. Best part of hunting the unknown: no cameras allowed. Stick to the code team, sometimes it is best shredded, but not shared.

Overcoming injuries, surfing while pregnant

One of the most exciting parts of BOMBA is telling local stories, and this month, we interviewed two girls who told very different stories. Marie shared her incredible surfing experience while being six months pregnant. Mariah talked about overcoming an ACL injury and operation! You go, girls! Thanks for sharing your intimate stories with us; they inspire all our readers.

The WSL Season begins

At last the long wait is over and the WSL begins in Pipeline! John John Florence, who will not be on the CT this season, will be competing as a wildcard in Pipe, and look out for Kelly Slater too! What a season opener we’re going to have! Keep those names in mind, but remember: Pipeline’s for the fucking girls!

Look out for updates on www.bombasurf.com, bringing you all the news with two daily articles! This month we also shared an article about Kilojoules, the latest buzzword in measuring wave power.

Remember to join the Fantasy League and make your picks before every event. Malta Surfers have their own league; message Hadrien to get involved!

California Will Rise

As California battled hell over the last month, our thoughts are with the families who suffered losses and with the heroes who stood strong in the face of adversity. California will rise.

Next up: the crews travel!

February is going to be amazing for many of our local surfers, with two trips on the horizon. One group jets off to ride ocean waves in Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands, while another group heads out to Morocco for a dose of culture, waves and fun! Enjoy the madness, everyone! Nothing beats a group surf trip!
