Yesterday afternoon at Golden Bay, a group of local surfers became heroes after rescuing several tourists who were swept out by a strong current. The incident unfolded quickly as unexpected rip currents pulled swimmers away from shore, leaving them struggling to stay afloat.
Witnesses say that surfers in the lineup reacted instantly, paddling toward the group and helping them back to safety. “The current just changed in seconds,” said one of the rescuers. “If we weren’t out there, things could’ve ended very differently.”
This is not the first time local surfers have stepped in during emergencies at Golden Bay. With swimming conditions often unpredictable — especially during the off-season — they’re calling for lifeguards to be stationed year-round.
“These rescues happen far too often,” one surfer added. “We can’t rely on luck and locals every time. People’s lives are at risk.”
Golden Bay remains one of Malta’s most popular beaches, even outside the summer months, drawing both tourists and residents. The surf community is now urging authorities to recognize that safety shouldn’t have a season.
When tourists do hit the beach in high swell conditions, they often neglect safety by going in, thinking they can handle the conditions. The reality is they are not used to these seas which wake up dangerously. Kids are as usual the most at-risk, and we need to ensure aid is available all year round.
This keeps happening, whether its after 6pm in the summer months, or at any time during the winter months. Stay safe out there!
