Dog surfing on a wave at the beach.

Get ready for a splashy spectacle as dozens of canine competitors prepare to ride the waves at Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 20th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon. This beloved event, taking place on September 7th at Del Mar’s Dog Beach, will see talented pups showcasing their surfing skills for a chance to be crowned the ultimate surf dog.

Key Takeaways

  • The 20th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon will be held on September 7th at Del Mar’s Dog Beach.
  • Approximately 50 dogs are expected to compete, with some having trained all summer.
  • Judges will evaluate dogs on ride length, wave technique, enthusiasm, and confidence.
  • The event features family-friendly activities, a costume contest, and supports Helen Woodward Animal Center’s programs.

The Competition

Dozens of dogs from across San Diego are set to compete for the top surf dog title. These talented canines will be divided into heats, each lasting 10 minutes, to demonstrate their prowess on the waves before a panel of expert judges. The criteria for judging include the length of their ride, their technique on the waves, and their overall enthusiasm and confidence while on the surfboard.

Winners will be recognized in each weight class, with first-place finishers advancing to compete for the coveted "Best-In-Surf" title. For those with a flair for the dramatic, a freestyle surf contest offers a platform for dogs to share the board with a friend or showcase a special trick or costume, with points awarded for creativity.

More Than Just Surfing

The Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is a full day of fun for the entire family. Attendees can enjoy live beach music, a canine costume contest, and a dedicated kids’ activity area complete with games and crafts. A "BARKetplace" will feature various pet-focused exhibitor booths, and a free agility course sponsored by San Diego Pet Training will be available for dogs to enjoy. The day will conclude with an awards ceremony celebrating the talented surf dogs.

The dating app Hily will also be present, hosting a meet-up for singles and offering "My Mom/Dad is Single" bandanas for dogs to wear.
