Boardmasters hits the water as Cornwall hosts YETI Pro QS 4,000
Boardmasters returns to Cornwall as the YETI Pro QS 4,000 opens competition at Fistral Beach, with Lukas Skinner, Sean Gunning and leading women surfers advancing.
Boardmasters has returned to Newquay, bringing elite surfing back to Cornwall’s Fistral Beach for a week of competition, music and coastal culture. The newly upgraded YETI Pro QS 4,000 opened the 2026/27 European Qualifying Series season’s second stop, with international surfers battling in challenging, wind-affected conditions.
Key takeaways
- The YETI Pro QS 4,000 features 96 men and 54 women from 18 countries.
- Local favorite Lukas Skinner produced the men’s standout performance on opening day.
- Sean Gunning advanced to the quarterfinals after a strong Round of 32 heat.
- Tiara van der Huls and Lucia Machado emerged as leading women’s contenders.
- The Boardmasters Longboard Pro will crown the European longboard champions.
Skinner leads the local charge
Two-time Boardmasters winner Lukas Skinner made an immediate statement in front of his home crowd. The 18-year-old posted the highest heat total of the day, a 17.00 out of 20, before defeating top seed Yago Dominguez and fellow Spaniard Dylan Donegan Dos Santos in the Round of 32.
Skinner’s victory over Enzo Cavallini secured his place in the next phase and kept alive his bid for a third consecutive Boardmasters title. After an early exit at the season’s opening QS event in Lacanau, the Newquay surfer has an opportunity to rebuild momentum on familiar waves.
Gunning advances as challengers fall
Last year’s men’s runner-up, Sean Gunning, also enjoyed a productive opening day. After a competitive Round of 64 heat against Kai Odriozola, the Spanish surfer raised his level in the Round of 32, earning a 15.23 total and progressing to the quarterfinals ahead of Thomas Debierre.
The opening rounds also delivered several upsets. Challenger Series surfers Ido Hagag and Guilherme Ribeiro were eliminated, while British contenders Fynn Gillespie, Stanley Norman and Luke Dillon also saw their campaigns end. Uri Uziel and Hans Odriozola were among those to benefit from the reshuffled field.
Women’s field takes shape
The women’s competition produced its own surprises, including an early elimination for Erica Maximo, who had finished runner-up at Lacanau. Tiara van der Huls responded with a controlled 12.40 heat total, while Lucia Machado delivered the day’s most explosive women’s performance.
Machado opened with a 6.67 before adding an excellent 8.17 to defeat Camilla Kemp. Ariane Ochoa also advanced comfortably after finding a strong 7.00 wave. Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri, Maria Salgado and Maelys Jouault were among the other surfers moving deeper into the event.
Longboard title adds to festival week
Once the QS competition concludes, attention will turn to the Boardmasters Longboard Pro presented by YETI. The event will decide the European longboard champions, with Newquay-based Ben Skinner seeking a breakthrough after placing third last year.
The 41-year-old surfer-shaper arrives in strong form following a win in La Union and a runner-up finish in Ferrol. Defending champion Ginger Caimi and rankings leaders Edouard Delpero and Caimi will headline a compact but experienced field.
What comes next
Competition officials planned an early Thursday call, with the goal of completing the QS finals before beginning the longboard event. Boardmasters runs through August 9, combining surfing with skateboarding, wellness, food, art and live music across the Cornish coast.
The Boardmasters Open is scheduled to stream from August 7-9 through World Surf League platforms, including its website, app and YouTube channel.
