BYD’s most affordable European model, the Dolphin Surf, has earned the coveted five-star safety rating from the independent Euro NCAP organization. This achievement underscores BYD’s dedication to integrating advanced technology and development, setting a high standard for safety within the competitive compact electric vehicle segment.

Key Takeaways

  • The BYD Dolphin Surf received a maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
  • It demonstrated excellent performance in crash protection and advanced safety-assist systems.
  • The rating highlights BYD’s commitment to safety, even in its more accessible models.

Comprehensive Safety Performance

The Euro NCAP evaluation, considered Europe’s most rigorous safety assessment, found the Dolphin Surf to offer "overall excellent performance in crash protection and well equipped with state-of-the-art crash avoidance technology." The vehicle excelled in critical impact tests, including the side-barrier and more severe side-pole impact tests, where it secured maximum points. This resulted in an 82% score for Adult Occupant protection.

Child Occupant Protection and Vulnerable Road Users

In terms of Child Occupant protection, the Dolphin Surf achieved an even more impressive 86% score. The vehicle’s safety systems were also evaluated for their interaction with other road users. The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system demonstrated effective reactions to cyclists and a good response to motorcyclists, contributing to a 76% score in the Vulnerable Road Users category. The Safety Assist systems, including driver monitoring and lane-departure support, were also recognized, with the AEB system performing well in reactions to other vehicles, leading to a 77% score in this area.

Industry Recognition and BYD’s Safety Record

This five-star rating is a significant accomplishment for a compact EV, positioning the Dolphin Surf favorably against its direct competitors. Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, commented, "BYD is a technology company and the 120,000 engineers in our R&D division are constantly pushing to innovate and deliver better products for customers." She further emphasized that achieving a five-star Euro NCAP score on a more compact vehicle is particularly challenging, proving that the Dolphin Surf offers no compromise on safety. This marks the eighth five-star Euro NCAP rating for BYD since its European passenger car market entry in 2022, with models like the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, Seal U, Tang, and Sealion 7 also having received top safety accolades.
