Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau Surf Advisory Extended as Powerful Swell Builds
A high surf advisory for north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau now runs through 6 p.m. Friday, with waves forecast up to 22 feet.
The National Weather Service’s Honolulu forecast office extended the advisory Thursday afternoon as the swell’s expected size increased. Ocean users should follow guidance from safety officials and avoid entering the water when conditions are hazardous.
Swell expected to peak Thursday
The long-period north-northwest swell is forecast to remain especially large through Thursday evening. Surf should then slowly decline late Thursday night and throughout Friday, though the advisory remains in effect until Friday evening.
The updated forecast calls for waves of 16 to 22 feet along north-facing shores and 10 to 16 feet along west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
Dangerous conditions along exposed shores
The weather service expects moderate impacts, including powerful breaking waves and strong currents. These conditions can make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous, including for people near the shoreline.
Beachgoers and ocean users should heed instructions from ocean safety officials. The advisory applies to the north and west shorelines of both islands; conditions can vary by location, so use caution even where surf appears manageable.
