Pupo’s Trestles Win Narrows Medina’s Path to LA 2028
Miguel Pupo’s Trestles win moved him ahead of Gabriel Medina in the rankings, potentially changing Brazil’s World Surfing Games team and Medina’s path to LA 2028.
Miguel Pupo’s victory at the Trestles Pro reshuffled Brazil’s standings and may have cost Gabriel Medina one potential route to the 2028 Olympic surfing competition. With qualification still years away, Medina has several ways to reach the Games, but the change in rankings could affect which Brazilians represent their country at an upcoming Olympic qualifier.
Pupo's Win reshuffles brazil's Olympic deck
The Trestles result changed the Championship Tour order used to select Brazil’s team for the 2026 World Surfing Games. This impact is meaningful, but it does not end Medina’s Olympic hopes.
- Pupo moved ahead of Medina in the Championship Tour rankings after winning at Trestles.
- Brazil’s team selection for the World Surfing Games is based on rankings as of October 6.
- Medina can still qualify through several other events or through the 2027–28 Championship Tour.
The road to peru: World Surfing Games impact
The 2026 World Surfing Games, scheduled for November 6–15 in Peru, is an Olympic qualification event. The highest-finishing men’s and women’s teams earn a place for their country, which can then assign the slot under its own selection rules.
Brazil’s federation is reported to have chosen its World Surfing Games team using Championship Tour rankings from 30 days before the event begins. After Medina exited early at Trestles and Pupo won the competition, Pupo moved ahead of him. The reported top three Brazilian men are now Yago Dora, Italo Ferreira, and Pupo, leaving Medina outside that group unless the standings or team lineup change.
If Brazil wins the men’s Olympic slot in Peru, the federation’s reported policy would reserve it for a surfer who competed at the event. The eligible surfer with the best Championship Tour ranking during the Olympic qualification window, from August 15, 2027, to June 15, 2028, would receive the place. If that surfer had already qualified, the opportunity would pass to the next eligible surfer.
The slot could become an additional place for Brazil if the country has already filled its standard Olympic spots through other qualification routes. Olympic surfing generally limits each country to two competitors per gender, with an additional place possible under qualifying provisions.
Medina's other paths to LA 2028
Medina could qualify by finishing as Brazil’s top surfer on the 2027–28 Championship Tour, placing in the top seven at the 2028 World Surfing Games, or winning the 2027 Pan American Games. He could also enter the 2026 World Surfing Games team if one of the currently higher-ranked Brazilians does not compete.
So Pupo’s win has narrowed one possible path, rather than deciding the outcome. The qualification picture can still shift as events and rankings unfold before LA 2028.
