Teen Lifeguard’s Split-Second Rescue Saves Boy From Powerful Santa Cruz Surf

A 10-year-old Dallas boy is recovering after a powerful wave swept him off his feet at Santa Cruz’s Seabright Beach. As pounding surf carried him farther from shore, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams entered the water, held on through several crashing waves and helped bring the unconscious child back to safety.

Key takeaways

The rescue unfolded quickly in dangerous conditions, with multiple people ultimately helping get the boy safely to shore.

  • Nathaniel Rai was visiting Santa Cruz with his mother when he was swept away in shallow water.
  • Lifeguard Ryder Williams reached him after seeing him lose his footing.
  • Nathaniel went limp and was unable to use a rescue tube in the rough surf.
  • A second lifeguard and beachgoers helped complete the rescue.
  • The boy later reported breathing difficulties for several days and a sore back but was recovering.

A vacation turns dangerous

Nathaniel was visiting the California coast on July 25 when a large wave knocked him down in what initially appeared to be ankle-deep water. The current quickly pulled him away from shore, and he began calling for help.

He remembers only parts of what happened. After being swept into the surf, he believes he briefly lost consciousness. His next clear memory was seeing lifeguards and other rescuers around him.

Lifeguard battles the waves

Williams said he saw Nathaniel in trouble and entered the water. The surf was too turbulent to secure a rescue tube around the boy, who had become limp. Williams held him tightly while waves repeatedly crashed over both of them.

The teenager said he knew he could not get the child out alone and focused on maintaining his position until another lifeguard could reach them. Video of the rescue shows the pair disappearing beneath the waves before reemerging as the water receded.

A second lifeguard and several beachgoers then assisted in bringing Nathaniel to shore.

Family calls the rescue a miracle

Nathaniel swallowed water and sand during the ordeal and later experienced coughing, breathing trouble and back soreness. About a week and a half afterward, his family said he was doing much better, aside from a bruise caused by the force of the rescue.

His father, Sumit Rai, said watching the video made clear how close his son had come to being carried farther out to sea. He credited Williams and the other rescuers with acting decisively in conditions he described as extremely dangerous.

Nathaniel has since spoken with Williams and expressed his gratitude. The widely viewed rescue video has also drawn attention beyond Santa Cruz, highlighting the risks of powerful surf and the importance of trained lifeguards responding quickly.
