Virginia Beach Welcomes Memorial Day Weekend Amidst Chilly Winds and Rough Seas
Virginia Beach faces gusty winds and rough surf over Memorial Day weekend, prompting safety warnings from lifeguards while visitors find alternative ways to enjoy the Oceanfront.
Memorial Day weekend in Virginia Beach kicked off with less-than-ideal beach weather, as visitors were met with gusty winds and rough surf. Despite the chilly temperatures, many tourists are still embracing the holiday spirit, exploring the Oceanfront and local attractions.
Key Takeaways
- Red flags are prominently displayed along the resort area beaches, warning of dangerous surf conditions.
- Officials are strongly advising beachgoers to exercise caution, particularly if considering entering the water.
- Lifeguards are on duty throughout the weekend, though staffing levels are not at their peak summer capacity.
- Visitors are encouraged to prioritize safety by staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and seeking shade.
Navigating the Conditions
While the weather may not be conducive to swimming, visitors like Nick Kopf are finding ways to enjoy their time. "The weather got a little cold, but we kinda held out, enjoyed ourselves on the beach for a little while, and then we went in town, hopped around restaurants and stuff like that," Kopf shared.
Tom Gill, chief of the Virginia Beach Life Saving Service, emphasized the importance of heeding the warnings. "If it looks bad, it’s probably not the time to go in," he stated, adding, "I don’t think the temperature is going to make it feel like you want to get in the water this weekend."
Lifeguard Presence and Safety Advice
Approximately 50 lifeguards are patrolling the Oceanfront, North End, and Croatan areas during the holiday weekend. While not at full summer staffing, Gill assured that there are "plenty of people to take care of what we’re going to see this weekend with the weather as it is."
Gill anticipates that many will still opt to relax on the sand. He advises beachgoers to focus on safety essentials such as "Shade, sunscreen, lots of water and hydration, and good food to eat that gives them the energy to deal with the day."
Beyond the Water
Even with swimming conditions being unfavorable, Virginia Beach offers numerous other activities. "It might not be the best weekend to come out for the swimming part, but Virginia Beach is a great place. You’ll find plenty to do," Gill remarked.
Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 8 p.m. The Virginia Beach Life Saving Service is also planning to hire around 200 lifeguards for the upcoming summer season.
