WSL Drops Surf Abu Dhabi Pro as Regional Conflict Disrupts 2026 Tour
The World Surf League has canceled the 2026 Surf Abu Dhabi Pro, citing regional conflict, flight restrictions and logistical challenges. The Philippines Pro will replace it.
The World Surf League has removed the Surf Abu Dhabi Pro from its 2026 Championship Tour calendar, citing persistent international flight restrictions and the ongoing security situation in the Middle East. The event had already been postponed once, but organizers ultimately determined that holding it this season was not feasible.
Key takeaways
The cancellation reshapes the final stages of the 2026 Championship Tour while preserving a 12-stop competitive season.
- The Abu Dhabi event was scheduled for November 25–29 after being moved from October 14–18.
- The WSL cited flight constraints and regional conditions as the deciding factors.
- The Philippines Pro will serve as the replacement event on the calendar.
- Four Championship Tour stops remain after the decision.
Why the event was canceled
The WSL said it considered every option to retain the Surf Abu Dhabi Pro, but ongoing logistical and regional challenges made staging the competition impractical. International travel limitations were a particular concern as athletes, staff and production crews would have needed to reach the United Arab Emirates from across the globe.
The decision comes amid continuing instability connected to the wider Middle East conflict. Several sporting events in the region have faced cancellations or uncertainty as governments and organizers assess security risks, transportation disruptions and the potential impact on international visitors.
What happens to the 2026 schedule
The league had already added a Philippines event at Cloud 9 to help maintain a full Championship Tour season if Abu Dhabi could not proceed. That competition, scheduled for October 31 through November 10, will now take the place of the canceled stop.
The remaining 2026 schedule is:
- Lexus Trestles Pro — September 11–20
- MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal — October 16–25
- Philippines Pro — October 31–November 10
- Lexus Pipe Masters — December 8–20
The WSL said the season-long format, which includes three throwaway results in the rankings, is designed to protect competitive balance and preserve the integrity of the world-title race despite the calendar change.
Partnership remains in place
Although the event will not take place this year, the WSL emphasized that Surf Abu Dhabi remains an important partner in its international expansion. The league said it expects to continue working with the venue and explore future events in the region when conditions allow.
For now, the tour will move from California to Portugal, the Philippines and Hawaii as championship contenders enter the decisive portion of the season.
